[edit] Open standards process

The sign language data documentation project will supply the raw material for the open standards of SignWriting. The open standards are to ensure that SignWriting's use are properly implemented and unrestricted.

  • Royalty free
  • No patent restrictions

OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) is being considered to provide structure to the process and ensure that all interested parties have a voice in the standards.

No other organizations are being considered at this time. Please contact Steve if you would like to be actively involved.

[edit] Open source implementation

The open standards need to be fully implemented with open source code available. These are my current projects.

[edit] MovementWriting numbering system

SignWriting is only a part of the general system of MovementWriting. The ISWA 2008 is only a part of the possible symbol set of MovementWriting. While the ISWA 2008 has been encoded as character data, the possible set of MovementWriting symbols is infinite and will not be encoded with character codes.

Previously, there was the International MovementWriting Alphabet IMWA. This set was a work in progress and never finished. The modern International SignWriting Alphabet ISWA 2008 is a refinement of this historical set. The numbering system used in the IMWA is not compatible with the ISWA. The general numbering system of MovementWriting needs to be updated to fit the ISWA 2008 standard.

[edit] Status

In theory, the numbering system for the IMWA will add 5 SymbolGroups to the 30 of the ISWA. Read the IMWA Reborn for the specifics.

In 2010, the IMWA will be revisited. The old IMWA symbols may be converted to the new numbering system. Or an SVG based MovementWriter application will be developed.

[edit] SignWriting Literature Archive
